‘Wheely’ good times had in the park with The Skate Scholarship
The Skate Scholarship brought wheels, confidence, and plenty of weekend joy to Burley Park and Wortley Recreation Ground this spring and summer.
Supported by our community grants programme, coaches and supporting volunteers ran twelve free roller-skating sessions for residents of all ages. At Burley Park, the bandstand became a lively hub of movement and music, with 22 skaters joining the team each week to learn new skills and build confidence, many putting on skates for the very first time. Meanwhile, in Wortley, a small group of eight enthusiastic skaters came together to learn balance, safety, and technique, making remarkable progress over the six weeks.
The grant allowed The Skate Scholarship to bring coaches, equipment, and spare skates in every size so no skater was left out. Participants shared glowing feedback, with many planning to continue skating long-term.
From first wobbles to confident laps, these sessions brought movement and fun to two local parks, showing how roller-skating can boost fitness, confidence, and joy all at once.
“We really enjoyed the sessions we attended every Saturday at Burley Park. We hope you come back next Spring!”
