RETAS introduces city’s green spaces to Welcome to Leeds project.

RETAS is a community-based charity that supports the social, cultural and economic integration of refugees and asylum seekers in West Yorkshire. The charity strives to build confidence and hope in their service users and empower them to build a safe and secure life in the UK.

As part of their Welcome to Leeds project, RETAS organised walks and picnics in Burley Park for those seeking asylum in Leeds. The first event was held in the Summer of 2024, with another in the Autumn. Participants played games, shared food, and got to know both the city and each other better. 

Over the two events, thirty asylum seekers were brought together to connect with nature and their neighbours in the park, away from their hotel residence. Many attendees were new to Leeds, socially isolated and unfamiliar with their surroundings, so greatly appreciated the opportunity to explore and learn more about their new community as part of a trusting and supportive group.

This activity was funded by Love Leeds Parks through our Community Parks Activity Grants scheme. This scheme was made possible by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and with thanks to National Lottery Players.
