New Pond at Gledhow Valley Woods

June 2020

Well done to Friends of Gledhow Valley Woods for completing their project to restore a long-neglected pond in the much loved woods.

The pond, funded by our first grants programme, will provide a rich habitat for wildlife, including frogs, toads and newts, as well as improving biodiversity and public access to blue infrastructure in the area.

The project involved de-silting the pond and extending it putting in a clay lining. The surrounding area was then cleared of brambles and will be planted with native wild flowers and aquatic plants.

About 30 volunteers worked on the project and Friends of Gledhow Valley Woods now plan to organise school activities and healthy walks around the pond.

“We look at the woods as our other front garden, so massive thanks to everyone concerned for helping to make this happen and ensuring that our beautiful pond and beck are conserved for our kids and their kids, ” said one happy local.

The project, is one of 13 funded in our first grants round, underway again following the disruption caused by lockdown.
