Friends of Burley Park inspire new volunteers with community planting initiative.

Friends of Burley Park is a volunteer community group committed to improving the green space within and around Burley Park, Leeds.

In January 2024, the Friends Group ran a community planting event which saw fifty residents of all ages come together in planting native bulbs in their local park, to enhance the park’s biodiversity and public enjoyment.

This collective planting effort was celebrated in the Spring, with up to one hundred residents enjoying the park at a community picnic.

The Friends Group hope that these events will inspire more people to take an active role in caring for their local park, and have already reported a growing number of young residents joining their mailing list following the project.

“There was a good mixture of families with the children getting together to play, students and young professionals bringing a picnic and meeting up, and older people… One resident said she now felt comfortable bringing her disabled husband to the park, as she knew there would be others there.”

This activity was funded by Love Leeds Parks through our Community Parks Activity Grants scheme. This scheme was made possible by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and with thanks to National Lottery Players.
