Bowls, brews and banter: Winter volunteering at Stanningley Park

“I think it was nice that everyone mucked in and got stuff done, it’s made such a noticeable difference.”

Stanningley Park Bowling Club’s ‘Winter Volunteer Sessions’ proved that even the chilliest days can bring people together! Held regularly throughout the off-season, these sessions gave club members and local volunteers a chance to stay connected, stay active, and make a real difference to their park.

Each week, a core team, joined by new faces, rolled up their sleeves to clear leaves, plant, tidy, and improve the grounds. With tasks suited to all abilities, everyone found a way to get involved, share skills, and enjoy the satisfaction of seeing real progress.

Hot drinks and free pastries kept spirits high, and laughter and conversation flowed as easily as the tea. More than just a bit of winter maintenance, these sessions kept friendships thriving long after the main bowling season ended, proving that community warmth can outshine even the coldest days.
